• THE
SPORT •
Skimming, Skimboarding, Skimboard or just Skim started as an entertainment but
now it's a radical and promising sport already with international competitions.
Originating from U. S. A., in the beginning was practised in flat beaches. Nowadays,
made with new shapes and other materials (specially foam core), skimboards are
no more a exclusive kid's toy. Used to slide from one side to another of the
shoreline's filmn of water, now, they're used to get futher out into the shorebreak
making all kind of manouvers generally associated only with Surfing, because
the boards are larger and lighter than woodboards, still used for beginners,
specially in the Summer.
• WHO CAN DO IT •
Everybody who likes a radical beach sport, a 4 year's old kid or an adult with
no age limits (as long you can run...). After knowing and try this exciting sport,
they all became skim fans.
• PORTUGUESE BEACHES •
Any flat beach at low tide is good for the beginners
to pratice the Free-Style(in our country we have a
lot, like Carcavelos and Costa da Caparica). Advanced
riders like steep beaches because the waves break closer
to shore. The best beaches for these riders are: in
Algarve (Iha de Faro, Falésia, Vilamoura, Quarteira,
Praia da Rocha etc). In Alentejo ( Porto Covo, Malhão, Comporta, Carvalhal,
etc) . Near the catipal Lisbon (South - Sesimbra, Meco, Lagoa de Albufeira and
Fonte da Telha. North - Praia Grande, Adraga, Guincho, Carcavelos and S. Pedro
do Estoril - one of the favourit spots). In West region(Santa Cruz, S. Pedro
de Moel, Vieira de Leiria, Barra / Aveiro, etc).
In the North ( Espinho, Esmoriz, etc.). There are more places for you to find. In
Spain there are also very good beaches, for more info see, www.skimespana.net.
• FUN AND ADRENALIN •
Even when you're a beginner, skimboards allow you to
have real fun and adrenalin because they slide very
fast. When you have more experience and begin to catch
waves, the adrenalin goes up because you can join your sliding speed to wave
energy, making an explosive mix.
• HOW TO START •
First of all, you must have an appropriate skimboard
for your height skim level and usual spot (read all
the skimboard instructions and in case of doubt contact
us). People with + 70 Kg must chose big size. Prepare your board by rubbing wax
on the deck. Do some warm up exercises before start. Go to the wet zone on the
shoreline. Start to throw the board only when it was a thin film of water left
by a receding wave.Start running slowly and throw the board just a little bit
ahead of you.
Catch up to it in a couple of steps and jump on gently, crouch down as low as
possible, keeping your knees bent. It's the same as skateboarding with inavoidable
falls. After you know the basic of this sport you can begin to think about turning
off the waves as they hit the shore.
• SAFETY BASICS •
Never skim with rocks in the shoreline, never do flips
or dives into shallow water, never skim through crowds
of people and never let your board get away from you. Enjoy Skimming, don't be
in trouble.
• SKIMBOARD CARE •
A board bag is important for protection (Dings, keep
wax off your clothes and car, sun, travel, etc). Dings
on wood and foam boards can be repaired with ordinary
polyester resin or epoxy. Fiberglass is better for big dings. There are many
repair kits for surf and windsurf boards in the market, but we have our skimboard
repair kit. One more thing, don't let your borard (specially foamboards) in a
car on a hot day or lay down on the sand like a lizard. Take care of your board
and she won't let you down.
